Drones pose special threat to outdoors ethics

In the Jan. 15 edition of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Outdoors Editor Paul Smith wrote:
Wisconsin administrative code 19.25 prohibits the use of aircraft to “hunt, to harass hunters or to disturb wildlife,” so drones (unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs) are currently covered by this statute. UAVs have become relatively inexpensive, however, so hunters, wildlife watchers and anti-hunting activists are likely to start using them, regardless of their legality.
A hunter could send a drone out to scout an area he plans to hunt or to drive game to his location. This would be illegal, but it is possible nonetheless with current technology.
In fact, PETA is planning to start using them to harass hunters:
"PETA's drones will help protect wildlife by letting hunters know that someone may be watching — and recording — them, so they should think twice before illegally killing or maiming any living being," PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement last October. "Wildlife watchers outnumber wildlife killers five to one — and if even a fraction of these kind people use hobby drones, they'll make a huge difference by exposing hunters' dirty secrets."

23rd annual Kids' Ice Fishing Clinics set for Saturday, Feb. 8

MILWAUKEE - Kids 15-years-old and younger can discover the fun of ice fishing at the 23rd annual Kids' Ice Fishing Clinics on Saturday, Feb.8, at park ponds and lagoons in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties.
The free clinics will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants receive instruction on the proper use of equipment and techniques, knot tying, safety and much more. The clinics last 45 minutes and begin every hour on the hour starting at 9 a.m., with the last one starting at 2 p.m. If the weather and ice conditions allow, kids will be able to fish after receiving the classroom instruction.
"These clinics are an excellent way to introduce youngsters to the sport of fishing and a perfect opportunity for families that want to enjoy some of the outdoor recreational activities that Wisconsin has to offer," says Matt Coffaro, Department of Natural Resources urban fish biologist. "It's the dedication of volunteers from the local fishing clubs that make it all work."
The clinics represent a cooperative effort by the Wisconsin Council of Sport Fishing Organizations, Milwaukee County Parks, the Hunger Task Force Fish Hatchery, and the Department of Natural Resources.
No pre-registration is necessary for the clinics. Equipment and snacks will be provided and it's all free; just dress warm. As in past years, the classroom instruction will occur regardless of weather and ice conditions on Feb. 8, with the actual ice fishing portion of the clinics dependent on the day's conditions. For more information call the DNR Urban Fishing Hotline at 414- 263-8494 or DNR Urban Fish Biologist Matt Coffaro at 414- 263-8614. DNR approves exploratory drilling application

MADISON - Gogebic Taconite, LLC, has received approval from the Department of Natural Resources to conduct additional exploratory drilling at the company's proposed mine site in northern Wisconsin.
The company recently submitted an exploratory mining application to drill 15 exploratory drill holes at the site located in Ashland and Iron counties. Gogebic Taconite had applied for and received an exploration license in the spring of 2013 and drilled eight exploration drill holes last summer.
The application is available for viewing on DNR's web page about the project. You can also search for Gogebic on the DNR website. The agency has created a listserve for anyone interested in receiving updates about the project.
The area of interest is part of the Penokee/Gogebic deposit, which is also part of the 60-mile long Gogebic Iron Range that stretches east to west from Lake Gogebic, Michigan, to Mineral Lake, Wisconsin.
