Spring turkey permit levels reduced to address hunter concerns over winter losses

MADISON - Remaining over-the-counter permits in Turkey Management Zones 6 and 7 will not be issued and over-the-counter permits in zones 4 and 5 will be reduced by 25 percent in response to hunter feedback requesting a conservative approach to the number of permits issued for this spring's hunt, due to concerns that increased winter mortality has depressed turkey numbers.
Although Department of Natural Resources biologists recognize that spring harvests do not play a significant role in wild turkey population dynamics, it is clear that prolonged periods of cold and deep snow have impacted turkeys throughout the northern part of the state.
BUT... in the March 15 edition of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Outdoors Editor Paul Smith wrote:
Science doesn't support cut in spring turkey permits. In the realm of conservation, hunters have no better ally than science. It's the bedrock of North American wildlife management, past, present and, hopefully, future. So when state officials make a decision that's more "feel good" and less science, hunters should take note.

Youth Expo Organizer Chooses DNR’s MacKenzie Center For May 15-16 Outdoor Heritage Education Event

The Midwest Outdoor Heritage Education Expo has reserved the MacKenzie Center, Poynette, Wisconsin, May 15-16, to host students for a unique outdoor field trip experience, according to organizer Mark LaBarbera. Admission is free. Some funds are available to help schools with transportation costs.
“Where else can students be face-to-face with live wolves, bobcats, mountain lions and eagles, and participate in archery, airgun, fisheries, forestry and so many other fun activities, all in one location,” said LaBarbera, who is bringing together conservation groups and others for the outdoor education expo. He added, “Educators and school administrators appreciate that many of the activities correlate with state and national education standards.”
Students will also be given information about on-going mentored programs so they can develop their outdoor skills and enjoy lifelong outdoor activities.
JD Smith, DNR MacKenzie Center Director said, “We are excited to have the opportunity to host the Midwest Outdoor Heritage Education Expo at the MacKenzie Center. The DNR is a supporting partner at many other expos and we are happy to continue that support by providing an ideal location for schools to bring students for this outdoor experience.”
The Department of Natural Resources MacKenzie Center is located on a 500-acre property 25 miles north of Madison near Poynette at W7303 County Highway CS. The center features interpretive trails, exhibits, museums and programming for school and youth groups. The state game farm is connected to the center.
Rob Bohman, Chair of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, said, “Friends of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress will offer transportation grants up to $200 for schools planning to attend the Midwest Outdoor Heritage Education Expo.”

Additional funding is coming from individuals and groups across the state who want their local schools and students to connect with natural resources and healthy outdoor activities. Safari Club International chapters in Wisconsin provided critical initial funding. Volunteers, donors and educators can reach LaBarbera at 608-854-2196 or mobile 520-730-9252, or malabarb@peoplepc.com for more information.

Deer herd status meetings and annual spring fish and game hearings combined in 2014

MADISON -- Planning for the 2014 deer hunting season is underway and wildlife biologists with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources invite anyone interested in discussing Wisconsin's deer herd to attend deer herd status meetings.
In 2014, these meetings will be held in conjunction with DNR and Wisconsin Conservation Congress' annual spring fish and game hearings on Monday, April 14 at 7 p.m. in each of Wisconsin's 72 counties.
DNR wildlife staff schedule deer herd status meetings annually and will once again seek public input on a variety of deer-related issues. Herd status meetings provide an early opportunity for hunters and other interested individuals to discuss the current status of the deer herd and ask other deer management questions.
Local wildlife biologists will present information about new deer hunting rules and regulations that were recently adopted as part of the deer trustee report's two-year management review. Wildlife biologists will attend each meeting to listen to ideas and observations from the public and discuss possible strategies for managing Wisconsin's deer herd.
"We annually rely on hunter input to help inform our decisions, especially as they relate to antlerless permit levels," said Kevin Wallenfang, DNR big game ecologist.
"With all the changes as to how we approach deer management now, plus a tough winter and the impacts it will have on the herd, we hope that by holding the meeting jointly with the spring hearings, we will see an increase in public participation."
The spring fish and game hearings present an opportunity for anyone interested in natural resources management to share their input through non-binding vote and testimony to the DNR, State Natural Resources Board and the Conservation Congress on proposed hunting and fishing rule changes and advisory questions.
Those unable to attend a local meeting are encouraged to provide their personal input using an online herd status summary and survey, which will be active from March 25 to April 18. To participate, search the DNR website for keywords Deer Hunter Forum. Comments and survey results will be compiled and provided to the wildlife biologist responsible for each county before final permit levels are set for the 2014 deer season.
