DNR announces expanded customer service hours at Waukesha center

Poll Pic S937
MADISON -- The Department of Natural Resources is expanding over the counter service hours at its Waukesha center effective November 10. This is part of the DNR efforts to increase customer service hours statewide by over 6,000 hours. The Waukesha center will now offer counter service from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., five days per week.

"e;Excellent customer service is a top priority for DNR. Expanding the counter hours at service centers where we can makes it more convenient for our customers to obtain our services." said DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp. "We were able to increase the hours after moving vacancies to the Waukesha service center."

The Department has a four pillar customer service strategy: partnering with local businesses; using the internet; offering a toll-free call-center; and face-to-face counter service. Hunting and fishing licenses are sold over-the-counter at more than 1,300 retail locations. Customers can purchase their licenses from the convenience of their home. A call center/hotline serves customers seven days a week, 15 hours per day. These enhancements were implemented to complement the face-to-face service offered at service center locations.

"Staying in touch with customers is important to us. Between our customer service specialists who serve customers face-to-face or in the call center, internet sales and our local license vendors, we offer Waukesha area customers many ways to buy a license or get questions answered at convenient times and locations," said Diane Brookbank, Director of DNR's Customer & Outreach Services.

Benefits of this change include:
  • Approximately 6,000 more counter hours per year can be dedicated to face-to-face customer activities, 1,000 hours at each newly expanded location.
  • No additional funding or positions required for this plan.
  • Customers will continue to have access to DNR staff and license/registration services Monday through Friday; with services offered through the lunch hour.
DNR's statewide Call Center maintains high level of responsiveness to our customers.

Customers can talk to DNR customer service representatives by phone at 1-888-WDNRINFo (1-888-936-7463) seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. - making DNR more accessible than any resource agency in the country. Live chats are available the same hours; a link is on the DNR website dnr.wi.gov.

DNR customer service representatives are highly trained to interpret regulations, resolve license and registration problems, and are very knowledgeable about resources and recreational opportunities at the local level.

State Park deer management units no longer in place

There are no longer individual deer management units for specific Wisconsin state park system properties, as deer hunting is now allowed on most properties. Hunters no longer have to apply for special hunting access permits to hunt on state park properties. Each state park now falls within the county deer management unit in which it is located.

State parks are open for hunting and trapping beginning on Nov. 15 and running through Dec. 15, except that hunting with legal archery methods is allowed through Sunday, Jan. 4. There are some exceptions to the hunting in state parks rules. Hunting is not allowed in Copper Culture, Cross Plains, Governor Nelson, Heritage Hill and Lakeshore state parks, Hank Aaron State Trail, Fischer Creek State Recreation Area, Havenwoods State Forest, Lapham Peak and Pike Lake units of the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

Hunting is limited to bows and crossbows only in Big Foot Beach and Lake Kegonsa state parks. Harrington Beach, High Cliff, Kohler-Andrae, Peninsula, Perrot, Rib Mountain and Wildcat Mountain state parks and Loew Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest only allow the use of muzzleloaders, bows and crossbows during the firearm deer season.

Hunters who plan to hunt in any state park property are responsible for knowing what areas of each property are open to or closed to hunting. Hunting is prohibited within 100 yards of designated use areas such as picnic areas, campgrounds, beaches and heavily used trails. It is also illegal to discharge a firearm, air gun, bow or crossbow from or across any state trail or other area in a state park that is closed to hunting.

Maps of open and closed areas are posted at each property and are available by searching the DNR website for keyword hunting state parks.

All visitors to state park properties are encouraged to wear blaze orange or other brightly colored clothing during the open state park hunting period.

ATVs and UTVs are a great tool for hunters - be sure to check out some helpful tips and stay safe!

MADISON - ATVs and UTVs are great tools to assist with your hunt - keep a few safety tips in mind and ensure a safe hunt and ride.

  • Make sure you know who maintains the land you would like to use and if ATV/UTV operation is allowed.
  • All ATVs/UTVs registered for public use must display their registration ID number on a rear plate.
  • Always wear a DOT approved helmet; hunters are more likely to encounter low hanging branches and uneven or steep terrain.
  • Complete an ATV safety course. ATV riders at least age 12 and born after Dec. 31, 1987 must complete a course prior to operating an ATV. UTV operators must be at least 16 years old. This course may be completed in a classroom or on the internet.
  • Long guns, bows and crossbows must be fully unloaded before transport in or on an ATV or UTV.
  • Remove mud, dirt and any vegetation from your machine before using it in other areas - machines can easily transport invasive plant species or seeds that are harmful to local habitats.
  • Do not operate in or around waterways or wetlands. ATVs and UTVs are only allowed to cross waterways at bridges, roads or legal fords.

For more information regarding ATV/UTV laws and safety, visit the WDNR website then search keyword ATV.
