Natural Resources Board approves conditions of antlerless permit issuance through Deer Management Assistance Program
HAYWARD, Wis. Conditions under which antlerless tags are issued through
the Deer Management Assistance Program, recommended by the Wisconsin
Department of Natural Resources, were approved Aug. 13 by the Natural
Resources Board.
"The approval of these recommendations will provide greater flexibility to DMAP participants to manage habitat on their land for the benefit of wildlife through antlerless deer harvest," said DMAP Coordinator Bob Nack. DMAP cooperators enrolled in level two or three will be eligible to purchase reduced-price antlerless tags, following a property visit from DNR staff and a discussion of both short and long-term property goals with landowners. Landowners and department staff will discuss deer harvest strategies aimed at finding a balance between providing for quality wildlife habitat and continuing to ensure an enjoyable deer hunting experience. DMAP cooperators who purchase antlerless tags in 2014 may transfer these tags to others wishing to hunt on the enrolled property. It is important to note that these tags may only be used within the enrolled DMAP property. Antlerless tags may not be transferred to hunters for more than the $6 face-value price. DMAP is one of several new programs and changes resulting from a two-year review of Wisconsin's deer management program. DMAP will give landowners the tools and technical assistance needed to manage their property for deer and other wildlife. The program encourages sound land stewardship practices on private and public land, provides landowners with educational and networking opportunities, and helps improve relationships between landowners, hunters and DNR. Hunters are encouraged to check out the frequently asked questions page for more information. The FAQ feature provides brief responses to a wide variety of deer hunting questions, ranging from deer management unit boundaries to antlerless permits. Disabled deer hunters are encouraged to sign up for a sponsored hunt before September 1
MADISON -- Eligible
hunters interested in participating in the 2014 gun deer hunt for
hunters with disabilities are reminded that the deadline to enroll with a
land sponsor is Sept. 1.
In 2014, the disabled gun deer hunt will take place Oct. 4 to 12. As of July 1, 74 landowners had enrolled more than 76,000 acres of land across 44 counties for this year's hunt. For a list of sponsors for the 2014 season, please visit the WDNR website and search keywords disabled deer hunt. "At a time when it seems to be getting harder and harder to find a place to hunt on private lands, it's great to see such generosity shown by these sponsors who open their lands for this special opportunity," said DNR assistant big game ecologist Dan Kaminski. "This year, we have exceeded the total acreage of land enrolled in the 2011 and 2012 disabled gun deer hunts, and are on par with the amount enrolled in 2013." Hunters should contact sponsors directly and be prepared to provide their name, contact information and DNR customer ID number. To be eligible, hunters must possess a valid Class A, Class B long-term permit that allows shooting from a vehicle, or Class C or D disabled hunting permit. Hunters must also possess a 2014 gun deer license. It is important to note that some properties are able to accommodate more hunters than others. "Some of the smaller properties may only allow a few hunters this season, so hunters who have not already enrolled should be prepared to call multiple sponsors in various counties to determine remaining availability," said Kaminski. Deer hunters are encouraged to check out the 2014 deer season frequently asked questions page for more information. The FAQ feature provides brief responses to a wide variety of deer hunting questions, ranging from deer management unit boundaries to antlerless permits.
